Team Tennis is Exploding on the Alabama Coast

March 02, 2016

Competition is fierce yet fun, and good sportsmanship abounds as Team Tennis takes hold all over the Alabama Coast. Men's, Women's, Mixed and Senior Leagues feature hundreds of tennis devotees battling for pride, glory, and Tervus Tumblers or towels (for the victors).

The newest and arguably most energetic addition to the schedule came with the introduction of a World Team Tennis tournament in December. Produced by Gulf Coast Team Tennis, llc and slated to be an annual event, the Mobile Family Tennis Festival and Mylan WTT Tournament brought the unique team format pioneered 40 years ago by tennis great Billy Jean King back to Mobile. Affiliated and sanctioned by the World Team Tennis Association, the weekend featured competition in 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 divisions with the winners earning a spot in one of seven National Qualifying Tournaments and an opportunity to advance to the finals in Indian Wells, California.

Capturing division titles were: 3.0 Hit and Run - captained by Alice Huber; 3.5 Pony Riders - captained by Jon Simmons; 4.0 Aces Wild - led by Alabama Coasting's own, David Calametti; and 4.5 That Team - with Megan Cooper as fearless leader.
